A Method for Calculating Transient Surface Temperatures and Surface Heating Rates for High speed Aircraft by Robert D. Quinn Book PDF Summary

This report describes a method that can calculate transient aerodynamic heating and transient surface temperatures at supersonic and hypersonic speeds. This method can rapidly calculate temperature and heating rate time-histories for complete flight trajectories. Semi-empirical theories are used to calculate laminar and turbulent heat transfer coefficients and a procedure for estimating boundary-layer transition is included. Results from this method are compared with flight data from the X-15 research vehicle, YF-12 airplane, and the Space Shuttle Orbiter. These comparisons show that the calculated values are in good agreement with the measured flight data.

Calculation of Surface Temperatures in Steady Supersonic Flight

Surface temperatures were calculated for bodies in steady supersonic flight at Mach numbers from 2 to 10 and for altitudes from 50,000 and 200,000 feet and emissivities from 0 to 1. The importance of the effects of radiation and convection was determined. It was found, under the assumption of an isothermal atmosphere, that the gain of

Structural Failure Analysis and Prediction Methods for Aerospace Vehicles and Structures

This book deals with structural failure (induced by mechanical, aerodynamic, acoustic and aero-thermal, loads, etc.) of modern aerospace vehicles, in particular high-speed aircraft, solid propellant rocket systems and hypersonic flight vehicles, where structural integrity, failure prediction and service life assessment are particularly challenging, due to the increasingly more demanding mission

The Prediction of Errors and the Improvement of Data Obtained in Wind tunnel Heat transfer Tests

The measurement of heat-transfer data in a high-speed wind tunnel is considered in detail. The analysis is restricted to tests where transient temperature measurements are made by thermocouples attached to the back face of a thin-walled model. Methods of estimating the error in obtaining a heat-transfer coefficient due to extraneous

The Analytical Determination of the Thermal Response of a Typical Aircraft Structure Subjected to Transient External Heating and Cooling

The thermal analysis is presented of a portion of the external surface thermal protection system and load bearing structure of a hypersonic vehicle, whose mission consists of a climb-out to 100,000 feet, cruise at Mach 6, descent, and a final phase, termed turn around, which includes landing rollout, refueling and maintenance. Temperature-dependent
