Improving the Identification of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in Mainstream General Practice by Margaret Kelaher Book PDF Summary

"The Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (APHCRI), The Australian National University is delighted to publish this first stream of research funded by the Institute specifically targeting issues in the delivery of primary health care to Indigenous people. This research was commissioned by APHCRI from the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal Health (CRCAH) in response to the APHCRI Research Advisory Board’s desire to help address an Indigenous Health Priority. Poor identification of Indigenous people in mainstream general practice has been identified in previous research as a significant barrier to uptake of Medicare items that may assist Indigenous people in the prevention of chronic illness. This research is, therefore, designed as a first step towards improved targeting of health initiatives such as health assessments for Indigenous people. As with previous research streams funded by APHCRI, this work involves the systematic review and synthesis of current knowledge, as well as the translation of that knowledge into innovative and comprehensive approaches that can provide a strong basis for primary health care policy development. The report provides an analysis of the effectiveness of pre-existing strategies that aim to support identification processes and makes recommendations for future action in this area and the likely costs of doing this." p. VII.
